Publishing Briefs: BMG Chrysalis and Bella Union Join Up, Round Hill Acquires ‘When a Man Loves a Woman’ and More

Round Hill Music has acquired the writers’ rights to the Calvin Lewis-penned classic, “When A Man Loves A Woman,”  as well as picking up the publishing and administration rights to the catalog of hard-rock songwriter Marti Frederiksen.

Frederiksen has collaborated on writing songs with such artists as Aerosmith, Def Leppard, Motley Cure, Ozzy Osbourne and Foreignor as wll as songs like Daughtry’s “Crawling Back To You,” and Gavin Rossdale’s “Love Remains the Same.”

In yet another move, Round Hill Music also acquired the publishing and administration rights to Spacehog lead singer Royston Langdon, which also includes his future works. Terms of the deals are not disclosed, although sources suggest that Round Hill paid about $1.5 million for the Percy Sledge classic.

In other moves, the firm named Jennifer Scher, formerly with Spirit Music, as CFO; and Tamie Lester, formerly with EMI Music Publishing, as VP of creative marketing.

BMG Chrysalis and Bella Union Records have entered into a publishing joint venture, which will see BMG worldwide rights management services to artist sign to the resulting company, Bella Union Songs. Bella Union co-founder Simon Raymonde says he agreed to do a joint venture with BMG have seeing how close the company works with Bella Union artists like Beach House and Fleet Foxes.

In other BMG Chrysalis news, Boyz II Men has signed an exclusive worldwide publishing and masters agreement with the company. The band, which has a substantial hand in writing their material, will headline a residency at Tthe Mirage in Las Vegas, playing weekend shows from March through the end of the year.

Imagem Music has expanded its administration deal with Charles Strouse from the United States to a worldwide relationship. Strouse is best known for his hit musicals “Annie,” “Bye Bye Birdie,” and “Applause,” while he has also written film scores for “Bonnie & Clyde,” and “The Night They Raided Minskys.”

Warner/Chappell Music has signed Derek George to a worldwide co-publishing agreement. George recently produced Randy Houser’s How Country Feels, and has had his songs recorded by artists like Rascal Flatts, Wynonna Judd, Hootie & the Blowfish and Hannah Montana.

ole has signed a worldwide co-publishing deal for the existing catalog and future songs written by singer/songwriter Clare Reynolds, whose two albums Inside My Head and Colour My Heart, are included in the deal.

Her music has had synch deals for “Don’t Give Up,” with ABC-TV American medical drama series, “Private Practice,” while her “Take My Breath Away” was used in the official trailer of the Uma Thurman film, “Motherhood,” according to Ole. This year, Reynolds will work on a film project, the theme song for ABC Kids, music for a documentary, and the release of her third album, My Raging Storm, among other projects.
