Jennifer Grey was always the girl with great hair—until she wasn’t. “I never really had to worry about my hair,” Grey tells Women’s Health. “It was always my ace in the hole. It was curly and I had a lot of it. I could wear it naturally and people would say, ‘I love your hair.’ It never occurred to me that it would change.”

But as the 62-year-old Dirty Dancing star got older, she experienced what many people do as they age: Her hair did change. What was once full and lustrous felt somehow less so. It was subtle, and Grey didn’t even really notice it herself until mid-pandemic when she was having getting a cut in her stylist's backyard. “I told her that I felt my hair game wasn’t as strong, and she suggested I check out the Harklinikken hair clinic. I was like, ‘Hark-what?’ Can you just write it down for me?”

The products that changed Grey’s hair

After getting the goods from her stylist, Grey started researching Harklinikken (Danish for “hair clinic,” BTW) online. She soon learned she had to sign up for a consult, which seemed like a lot of work (“I just wanted to buy the extract product,” Grey says. “But I thought, ‘what the heck, I’ll do the consult.’”).

Soon Grey was meeting with Harklinikken founder Lars Skjøth, who had been researching hair loss in men and women for decades. “Lars told me that the skin on our scalps ages faster than the skin on our faces,” Grey says. “Did you know that?”

There were more surprising revelations to come: Much to Grey’s surprise, Skjøth told her that she needed to wash her hair daily—a foreign concept for a curly girl. “It was so counterintuitive to me,” she says. “I was thinking, ‘There’s no way I can wash my hair every day; I’ll just dry it out.’” According to Skjøth, the mountains of products Grey had to care for and style her hair, were merely masking her problem, coating her strands with silicones that would do nothing to facilitate any long-term shift in the quality or amount of hair sprouting from her head.

This is how Grey used the system

Grey left her consult with a daily shampoo and conditioner, a leave-in she was to comb through her hair, and the hero: A nutrient-rich extract that she was to apply directly to her scalp nightly. Each extract is customized to a particular person’s needs and hair, and it was no different for Grey.

Harklinikken's products run from about $15 up to $88 for the personalized extract, and there are more items in the line—a mask, some styling products—than the ones recommended to Grey. The others weren’t deemed necessary for the particulars of Grey’s situation, and the streamlined approach took a minute for Grey to wrap her head around. Still, with nothing to lose, she gave it a try. After shampooing and conditioning, she applied the extract to her scalp…and waited.

How long it takes to see results

Grey noticed a change in the quality of her hair quickly after starting the Harklinikken system: “My hair felt very dry, but I followed the instructions and did exactly what Lars told me to do,” she says. “I was doing the system with a girlfriend, and we’d check in on one another and both of us felt like our hair was getting a little bit better; a little bit thicker.”

And then at the four-month mark, Grey took an “after” picture—and couldn’t believe her eyes. “It was pretty dramatic—and I didn't realize how bad it was until I saw the improvement,” she says. “At first, I thought I was imagining things—my hair couldn't have grown that much so fast. And the hair that grew back was much thicker and quality was much better.”

That was two years ago—and Grey hasn’t looked back. “I don’t want to mess with something that's working,” she says. Recently, Grey met with a friend from high school, who, upon seeing her, assumed she was sporting a head full of extensions. “People have been commenting, saying how amazing my hair looks. But the best part is that I don’t need to do too much to it anymore. Now, when I wear it just curly right out of the shower, it looks better than it did before because it’s not all shredded and raggedy at the edges.”
