Producers Guild Delays Meeting on Possible Expulsion of Harvey Weinstein
Citing the need for confidentiality, the Producers Guild of America has delayed its emergency board meeting to decide whether to expel disgraced ex-mogul Harvey Weinstein.
The meeting had been set to take place on Saturday but will now occur on Monday.
“To ensure confidentiality of its proceedings, the Producers Guild of America has moved its special meeting of the National Board of Directors to Monday morning,” the organization said late Friday night.
The PGA leadership emailed members on Oct 11 to outline the procedures that are expected to lead to Weinstein’s expulsion from the group in the wake of a series of shocking accusations about sexual harassment and assault, starting with an Oct. 5 report in the New York Times. The Weinstein Company ousted Harvey Weinstein four days later.
Harvey Weinstein and his brother Bob Weinstein received the PGA’s Milestone Award in 2013. The trophy is one of the guild’s highest honors. Other recipients have included Clint Eastwood, Jeffrey Katzenberg, Steven Spielberg, Sherry Lansing, Ron Meyer, Alan Horn, Bob Iger, and Tom Rothman.
The PGA has about 7,000 members. The emergency meeting was called by the current co-presidents Lori McCreary and Gary Lucchesi, according to an email sent to the board by national exec director Vance Van Pettem, who cited language from the organization’s constitution:
“Any member of the guild who shall, in the opinion of the national board of directors, be guilty of any act, omission, or conduct which is prejudicial to the welfare of the guild…be censured, fined suspended, expelled from membership or his membership otherwise terminated.”
