The New Princess Uniform! Princess Leonor Sports Look Worn by Kate Middleton, Meghan Markle and More

Royals from around the world are hopping on the white-hot trend

Princess Leonor of Spain was all business on her 18th birthday — in the new go-to royal uniform!

The future queen of Spain wore a white suit to swear allegiance to the Spanish Constitution in Madrid on Tuesday, a significant step on her road to the throne as she turned the age of majority. The Princess of Asturias swept her hair into a low ponytail, providing a good look at her newly awarded government medals and the Collar of the Royal and Distinguished Spanish Order of Carlos III.

As she continues to define her royal style, Princess Leonor’s latest fashion statement took a nod from modern royal women — and is officially the new princess uniform. While previous generations of royal women rarely deviated from dresses and skirts (aside from her riding breeches, Queen Elizabeth was almost never photographed wearing pants during her record reign!), power suits are a fresh choice for modern royal duty. White might be the hottest hue, as Kate Middleton, Meghan Markle and Queen Letizia have all recently suited up in the shade!

The Princess of Wales, 41, wore her fitted white Alexander McQueen suit for the Rugby World Cup 2023 Group Stage match between England and Argentina in September, repeating an outfit that she’s increasingly reached for. Princess Kate wore the set with a matching belt at the Commonwealth Games in July 2022, switched it up with statement earrings at the unveiling of the National Windrush Monument at Waterloo Station that June and stepped out in the suit again for a stop in Jamaica during her royal tour of the Caribbean with Prince William that March.

Kate and William stepped up into elevated royal roles as the Prince and Princess of Wales following the death of Queen Elizabeth in September 2022, and one style insider says that Kate’s penchant for pantsuits reflects a new perspective.

"I think it marks a new era in her royal life," Bethan Holt, fashion director at the Daily Telegraph, previously told PEOPLE. "It shows her confidence is growing and that she’s willing to take more risks and do something that might not have come naturally to her."

"She’s transforming before our eyes. She might not be able to say to us, 'Look, my life is now completely different, me and my husband are one step closer to the biggest job of his life,' but she is saying that through her fashion choices," adds Holt, who authored The Duchess of Cambridge, A Decade of Modern Royal Style.

The Duchess of Sussex, 42, was recently bright in white onstage at "The Archewell Foundation Parents’ Summit: Mental Wellness in the Digital Age" panel in New York City, where she wore an off-the-shoulder ivory blazer and matching pants by Altuzarra.

Meghan previously made a fashionable splash in a white Valentino suit at the 2022 Invictus Games at The Hague, rocking the trend in an oversized style.

Princess Leonor’s mother, Queen Letizia, is also a fan of white suits! The Queen of Spain, 51, popped in her Carolina Herrera combo with a lace-trimmed top at a Princess of Asturias Foundation event at the Royal Palace in June.

Around the same time last summer, she sported the suit with a pale pink top to visit CREADE Refugees Center with First Lady Dr. Jill Biden.

Queen Letizia might be credited as the creator of the trending princess uniform, as she wore a white suit for the photo call following the announcement of her surprise engagement to the future King Felipe in 2003.

Proving that white separates suit Gen Z too, 16-year-old Princess Isabella of Denmark wore a white blazer and matching trousers for her confirmation in May 2022. The princess looked the part in a fashion statement straight from her mother Crown Princess Mary's royal closet!

Princess Mary previously wore the suit for a 2017 visit to Stockholm, and her eldest daughter gave it her own sparkly spin with a diamond and pearl brooch her grandmother Queen Margrethe gave on her 2007 christening day.
