Princess Eugenie, one of Queen Elizabeth's grandchildren, gave birth Tuesday to a baby boy, her first child and the monarch's 9th great-grandchild, Buckingham Palace announced.

The baby was born at 8.55 a.m. local time at The Portland Hospital in London, where Eugenie herself was born, according to the palace, and weighed 8 pounds, 1 ounce. The baby's father Jack Brooksbank, Eugenie's husband of a little over two years, was present.

"Her Royal Highness and her child are both doing well," the palace said in a statement. A name was not immediately announced.

Besides joining the growing brood of royal great-grandchildren, the baby is the first grandchild for Eugenie's divorced parents, Prince Andrew, the scandal-plagued Duke of York, and his ex-wife, Sarah Ferguson, Duchess of York.

The queen, her husband, Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh, Eugenie's parents and Brooksbank's parents, Mr. and Mrs. George Brooksbank, were informed and are "delighted with the news," the palace statement said.

Eugenie's Instagram account soon featured a new black-and-white picture of the baby's hand clasped by his parents' hands. The princess added three royal-blue hearts to the caption.

Eugenie's mother, who has written children's books and frequently posts about reading stories on her active Twitter and Instagram accounts, is thrilled about the baby and has said she can't wait to be a grandmother.

A 10th great-grandchild is also due soon to the queen's eldest granddaughter, Zara Tindall, daughter of the monarch's only daughter, Princess Anne the Princess Royal. Tindall is already the mother of two children: Mia Tindall, 7, and Lena Tindall, 2.

Prince Charles the Prince of Wales and his wife, Duchess Camilla of Cornwall, also added their good wishes in a tweet. "Congratulations to Her Royal Highness Princess Eugenie and Jack Brooksbank on the birth of their son," their message said.

Princess Eugenie, 30, is the younger of the two York daughters, and is 10th in line to the throne. Her baby is 11th in the royal succession.

The princess married Brooksbank in October 2018 at Windsor Castle, in a lower-key repeat of the nuptials that enchanted the world when Prince Harry wed his American girlfriend Meghan Markle there five months earlier.

Brooksbank is the brand director in Europe of Casamigos Tequila, co-founded by George Clooney.

The couple, who now live on the castle estate, announced Eugenie was pregnant in September, posting the news on the royal family's official Twitter account along with a photo of the couple from their wedding day.

As a relatively low-level member of the family who is not considered a "senior working royal," Eugenie has pursued a career in the art world, and currently is a director at the London art gallery Hauser & Wirth. She has art history and English literature degrees from Newcastle University.

Her sister, Princess Beatrice, 32, married Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi in July at a small, surprise ceremony amid the coronavirus pandemic, at The Royal Chapel of All Saints at Royal Lodge, her parents' longtime home on the Windsor Castle estate.

The sisters are the daughters of the queen's second-eldest son, Prince Andrew, 60, who stepped back from royal duties in November 2019 – effectively retiring early.

Although Andrew, said to be the queen's favorite child, had been mired in various controversies over decades, this move followed a disastrous interview with the BBC about his past friendship with a convicted American sex offender, the late Jeffrey Epstein, and accusations that he had sex with a 17-year-old girl who claims Epstein trafficked her to Andrew.

Andrew has acknowledged his relationship with Epstein was a mistake but he strongly denies the sex accusations, and his family backs him, especially his ex-wife, Sarah, with whom he shares Royal Lodge.
