In April 2024, Hathaway confirmed that The Princess Diaries 3 was happening. “We’re in a good place,” The Idea of You actress told V Magazine. “That’s all I can say. There’s nothing to announce yet. But we’re in a good place.”

Although Hathaway doesn’t explicitly state anything about her return as Mia, the above statement at least confirms her involvement in the project. No information is available on whether Julie Andrews will reprise her role as Mia’s grandmother and Queen Clarisse Renaldi.

Not much is known about the plot of The Princess Diaries 3, though Variety reported in November 2022 that Aadrita Mukerji (Reacher) is penning the script. The first Princess Diaries film is an adaptation of the namesake 2000 book by Meg Cabot. Although Cabot has since written several follow-up novels, The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement is based on an original story.
