After nearly 13 years of marriage, Charles Spencer—the 9th Earl Spencer and brother of the late Princess Diana—has announced that he and his wife Karen are divorcing.

"It is immensely sad," Charles told The Mail on Sunday. "I just want to devote myself to all my children, and to my grandchildren, and I wish Karen every happiness in the future."

Per the publication, the marriage began to come apart during the writing process for Charles's memoir, A Very Private School, which detailed his experiences as a child at Maidwell Hall boarding school, which he called a "strangely secretive place." The couple reportedly told the staff at the Spencer family estate, Althorp House, of their divorce plans this April.

Karen Gordon, a Canadian philanthropist and the founder and CEO of Whole Child International, married Charles in 2011, not long after his nephew, Prince William, wed Kate Middleton. Together, they share one daughter, named Charlotte Diana in homage to Spencer's late sister. Karen also has two other daughters with her ex-husband Mark Gordon, while Charles has six children from two previous marriages, including Lady Kitty and Lady Amelia Spencer.

Interestingly, Charles has reportedly retained Baroness Fiona Shackleton to represent him in the divorce. The move might raise some eyebrows as, amongst Shackleton's resume, which includes clients like Paul McCartney and Madonna, is one particularly notable entry: she represented the then-Prince Charles during his divorce from Princess Diana in 1996. That same year, she also represented Charles's brother, Prince Andrew, in his divorce from Sarah Ferguson, Duchess. of York.
