Princess Diana Honored with Plaque Outside London Flat She Lived in with Pals Before Marrying Prince Charles

Princess Diana's London flat — where she lived with roommates ahead of her 1981 wedding to Prince Charles — is now affixed with a plaque honoring the late Princess of Wales.

Brother Charles Spencer, the 9th Earl Spencer first shared the progress on the sign on Instagram on April 1, writing, "I'm tickled pink by these photographs showing a blue plaque being made for Coleherne Court, where Diana was so happy with her wonderful flat mates in her late teens."

English Heritage's curatorial director Anna Eavis said in a statement earlier this year that Diana "was an inspiration and cultural icon to many, raising awareness of issues including landmines and homelessness, and helping to destigmatise illnesses such as HIV, leprosy and depression."

Eavis added, "It seems fitting that we should erect a plaque commemorating her work and influence in what would have been her 60th year."

This sign has joined the more than 950 official blue plaques around London commemorating locations where historically significant people lived or worked.

Before marrying Prince Charles, Diana lived with friends while she worked as a nanny and a nursery school teacher.

The couple married in a 1981 ceremony watched by 750 million and had two children, Prince William and Prince Harry, before announcing their separation in 1992. They finalized their divorce in 1996, one year before she died at age 36 on August 31, 1997, in a car crash in Paris.

The plaque is part of the English Heritage's effort to honor more significant women, including British fashion designer Jean Muir, Irish crystallographer and anti-war campaigner Kathleen Lonsdale, scientist Dame Kathleen Lonsdale, former slave and campaigner Ellen Craft and barrister Helena Normanton.

Last November, Charles shared a rare photo with his older sister from their childhoods. They posed for the camera with Diana resting an arm around her little brother's shoulder.

And this past June, ahead of what would have been Diana's 60th birthday on July 1, he shared how he keeps her memory alive on special occasions.

"Every landmark day, such as birthday, Mother's Day, I always take flowers," he told Good Morning Britain. "I do go a lot, and it's an oasis of calm, and it's a lovely place to go."
