Don’t expect this royal to be asking for the Queen’s marriage approval. Princess Beatrice doesn’t need the Queen Elizabeth’s permission to marry, and the reason why is pretty fascinating. As per all the royal protocol, we wouldn’t have been surprised if the Queen’s granddaughter was required to ask for the sovereign’s permission, but we’re intrigued by this loophole.

The eldest daughter of Prince Andrew, Duke of York, and Sarah Ferguson, Princess Beatrice could be getting engaged any day now to her partner Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi. With a royal engagement comes all the pomp and circumstance we love — an announcement, candid couple interviews, and, of course, photos from the wedding ceremony. The royal weddings are always traditional, but there’s one element Princess Beatrice won’t have to deal with, according to PopSugar. With the birth of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s son Archie, Princess Beatrice’s distance from the throne means she won’t have to get permission to marry.

We know you have questions, so here’s the history behind the fascinating royal rule. According to the Royal Marriages Act of 1772, the reigning Monarch has the right to veto any marriage of a member of their royal family. The antiquated rule was put in place so that it would deter members of the royal family from marrying someone who could “diminish the status of the royal house.”

Originally, the rule applied to every member of the royal family, but after a change was made in 2013, the rule now only applies to the six people closest in line to the throne. As the ninth in line to the throne, Princess Beatrice won’t have to get permission from Queen Elizabeth II. Just like her sister, Princess Eugenie, Princess Beatrice can say “I do” without the sovereign’s approval. A royal sigh of relief!
