Prince William is shaking up his household staff structure, but apparently, not everyone is excited by the major moves. The Prince of Wales’ private secretary, Jean-Christophe Gray is exiting his role amid all of the changes — and it’s reportedly raising a few eyebrows in royal circles.

Just a few weeks ago, the Daily Mail gushed about William and Kate Middleton creating a new role in the household — a CEO to manage their staff of 60 people. This position dramatically shifts the power structure at the palace, and it was touted as “a revolutionary move” by a royal insider. “They are overthrowing the traditional, hierarchical structure in which staff answer to private secretaries,” a source told the media outlet. “It has really set the cat among the pigeons. Will the King and Queen have to follow their lead?”

Well, royal watchers have now seen how some of the palace staff is reacting to the new dynamic. Gray’s departure is significant because he was “widely respected in royal circles” and considered “William’s closest aide,” according to The Times. He will depart in the spring and reportedly is saying that “it had always been his intention to return to government.” However, the palace hierarchy probably was the real catalyst for his exit. He wouldn’t be the man in charge anymore and he would have to report to the CEO.

“Having a CEO placed above you isn’t an optimal job scenario if you are JC and your title is no longer head of the household,” a source noted. The changes behind the scenes could mean a shift in Kate and William’s ever-evolving PR strategy as they look ahead to their reign as king and queen. Their modern approach also may force King Charles III to make some dramatic moves at the palace — and that would only disrupt the private secretaries’ power even more.
