King Charles III’s coronation only happened seven months ago, but Prince William is reportedly deep into planning his own reign as king. He wants to shape his time on the throne ahead of the big day, and it’s going to look drastically different from Queen Elizabeth II’s historic era.

The Prince of Wales apparently has a “five-point plan” that will take the monarchy down in size — even smaller than his father’s wishes, according to the Express. “Focusing on the United Kingdom is very much a priority for William moving forward and there are already plans being worked on to that effect,” an insider told the U.K. publication. “There is a reluctance there from both William and Kate to join the tour of the Commonwealth because they feel it’s an outdated institution and not something they want to head.” It sounds like the couple’s messy Caribbean tour in 2022 affectedly them deeply.

That means that William and Kate Middleton will have “a homegrown focus” during their reign as king and queen, and they are hoping that smaller will actually mean a better and stronger monarchy for them. “Once William and Kate become King and Queen, everything will look very different,” the source added. “The wider family will be reduced to almost nothing, with the Wales family becoming the main focus. The Prince of Wales has already hinted that he wants “a reduced number of royal patronages and engagements” to make a greater impact, which completely defies what King Charles and his late grandmother preferred.

And there’s one thing royal fans shouldn’t expect: “Processions, rituals and official ceremonies.” Those are expected to be “scrapped in favor of more modern displays for state occasions” because “frugality” will be prioritized over “public displays of wealth.” Prince William has a huge opportunity to modernize the monarchy, but some royalists will probably hate the end of the historic traditions.
