Prince William has been spotted spending some quality time with his oldest son as the world continues to digest the news of Kate Middleton’s recent cancer diagnosis.

The Prince and Princess of Wales have mostly stayed out of the public eye in the nearly three weeks since Kate announced her diagnosis through a March 22 video message. But on Thursday, April 11, William and the couple’s oldest son, Prince George, were photographed attending a soccer game together in Birmingham, England.

Photos taken during the game showed the father and son clapping in support of Aston Villa during the UEFA Europa Conference League quarter-final game against Lille OSC. Aston Villa ultimately won the game with a final score of 2-1.

George, 10, is second in line to the throne behind William, 41. He is the older brother of Princess Charlotte, 8, and Prince Louis, 5.

In her March video message, Kate mentioned the care that she and William took in discussing her “huge shock” diagnosis with their children. Kate’s announcement, which followed a planned abdominal surgery in mid-January, came less than two months after Buckingham Palace revealed that King Charles III is similarly battling cancer.

“William and I have been doing everything we can to process and manage this privately for the sake of our young family,” she said at the time. “As you can imagine, this has taken time. It has taken me time to recover from major surgery in order to start my treatment, but most importantly, it has taken us time to explain everything to George, Charlotte and Louis in a way that is appropriate for them, and to reassure them that I’m going to be okay.”

Kate revealed her diagnosis as her children were beginning their spring break for the Easter holiday, leading some royal experts to suggest that the public announcement was timed in a way that allowed the family of five could get some distance from public speculation about the princess’ health. While Kate has not disclosed the type of cancer she is battling, she did reveal that she is undergoing preventative chemotherapy treatment in accordance with her medical team’s recommendations.
