Prince William is sharing his tips for a better mental well-being.

On Tuesday, during a forum in recognition of World Mental Health Day, William, 41, was asked for what “tricks” he has in his toolbox for helping cope with challenges. "For me," the royal shared, it was "just general maintenance, general mental well-being." More specifically, that meant "things, like walking, fresh air [and] getting away from screens is a big deal."

He also added, "Having a laugh. Humor for me is a big deal — I love to laugh. You’ve got to look at the lighter things in life sometimes to feel good," before also noting that "time with my friends, time with my family — things like that really matter to me."

While speaking at Exploring our Emotional Worlds, an event aimed at people 16 to 24 year olds, William revealed that he also was picking up "tricks" from the young participants around him and wife Kate Middleton on Tuesday.

"It’s really important that you have something for everything. That, to me, is all about learning off you guys as well,” he said. "As I speak to you all, I’m thinking in my head actually what you’re doing and how you’re managing or how you’re copying is a really useful strategy. So, I’m learning off you as I go around."

The prince added, "I meet loads of people and I’m always doing that in the background. Because I know I’m going to come across some points where I’m going to be, like, 'I don’t have a tool for this particular moment.' You’re always trying to learn from other people what tricks or tips or skills that they’ve experienced that you use for yourself. That’s probably the most wider bit of kit in the toolbox that I’ve got."

Elsewhere during Tuesday's forum, Kate, 41, gave a speech in which she praised the young people for feeling "empowered to talk about their mental health than ever before."

She told the crowd, "This is a major step forward. William and I continue to be inspired to see young people, like you all here today, leading this charge — being particularly brave in having some of those conversations yourselves. As a generation, you value and talk more about your mental health than any before you – something we truly admire and applaud."

William and Kate’s event, Exploring our Emotional Worlds, brought together 100 young delegates — nominated by 10 leading mental health and youth engagement charities — to take part in workshops with the royal couple focusing on emotions, relationships and community action.

The forum kicks off a series of outings that the royal couple will take part in this week — including one with university students and emergency responders and another one that will highlight the interaction between mental health and sports.

Soon after arriving at Birmingham's Factory Works center, the couple sat down to take part in some workshops, with Kate laughing along with young people during one session as she and others took turns to describe a feeling from an emotion wheel while others around the table had to guess what they were explaining.

Sharvari Patil, a 21-year-old volunteer with The Mix charity, told reporters afterwards that the workshop with Kate was called "Guess the Vibes."

"One person would have this emotions wheel and they would spin it and they would look away," she said. "The other people would have to try and tell them, try and explain which emotion it was through the action and how the emotion is presented. We got some interesting reflections around that, with people saying it was difficult because everyone expresses the emotion in a different way."

When it came to participating in the workshop with Kate, Patil added, "I was a little bit nervous but because she was very chilled, after she started interacting my nerves left. It was really nice running the workshop and feeling like she was so invested."

"She really threw herself in and she really embraced it. And she tried to give reflections as well," the volunteer continued. "So, when I asked everyone how they found it, I think her reflection was that having better emotional vocabulary would help people talk about their emotions more."

Adarsh Ramchurn, 22, who hosted William and Kate at the event, told reporters that the couple were "really invested" in what was being discussed at the forum.

He added that by them showing up demonstrated how they're dedicated to moving this issue forward. "We had a conversation before they left saying that they’re not just doing this for the sake of it, they are really passionate about the change they want to see," Ramchurn said.

"So, for young people to know that the Prince and Princess are really supportive of pushing forward mental health will I think help push their own mental health forward themselves and also give them the confidence that they need that they’ve got the support," he continued, adding, "You can tell that this is a passion and that’s what I felt really good about."

William and Kate's outing, meanwhile, comes as Meghan Markle and Prince Harry held their own initiative for their Archewell Foundation in New York City for World Mental Health Day. The event, The Archewell Foundation Parents’ Summit: Mental Wellness in a Digital Age, aimed to give voice to families who are passionate about building a safer online world for children and teens.
