Prince William seems to be having a hard time shaking the rumor that he had an affair with Kate Middleton’s BFF, Rose Hanbury. A jaw-dropping article by the Byline Times is revisiting how the rumor began in 2019 and how the Prince of Wales possibly tried to bury the gossip by getting the media to focus elsewhere.

The story began on March 13, 2019, when The Sun reporter Dan Wootton shared the reported news about a “falling out between Prince William and Kate and the Marquess and Marchioness of Cholmondeley, David Rocksavage and Rose Hanbury,” according to the article. It was Wootton who started the “rural rival” nickname for the tiff, but the story didn’t stay up on The Sun‘s side for long. Unfortunately for William, the news spread like wildfire across the globe.

Wootton, who reportedly “hated Prince William” suddenly had a change of heart in May 2019, according to a Byline Times source. “Behind closed doors, he didn’t have a good word for him,” they noted.” He was always talking about his attitude.” Well, things suddenly shifted for Wootton, who turned his attention to Prince Harry, someone he “never criticised” and “never seemed to have much interest at all.” By summer 2019, it was an all-out war with the Wootton and Sussexes. “Basically, he was hating on Harry and Meghan. He had previously been obsessed with Prince William. And then he switched to the Sussexes,” the insider added.

The explosive story is alleging that William “struck bargains” with Wootton and other media outlets that made Harry and Meghan Markle the core focus of their ire. It was a way for William to stop the Hanbury affair story in its tracks. That alleged deal with Wootton worked for a moment in time, but it also resulted in the Sussexes leaving the palace for good. That shift in allegiance feels downright sinister if it’s true because it split a family in two. William still hasn’t escaped the infidelity rumor — the Hanbury gossip lurks everywhere he turns.
