Allegations that Prince William had an affair sent shockwaves through the royal family and their fans earlier this year. Given the history that William's parents had with affairs, most thought he would be smart enough to avoid even the suggestion of infidelity.
If the allegations were true, they would obviously be hugely hurtful to his wife Kate Middleton, and they would also put a serious dent in William's popularity with the public. That's why most royal fans are hoping they're nothing more than rumors.
The evidence of an affair isn't exactly overwhelming, and British tabloids are known for being particularly vicious to the royal family. Earlier this year, Kate had a falling out with Rose Hanbury, one of her friends.
The reason for this falling out is still unclear, but many in the press began to speculate that it was because William had had an affair with her. Hanbury is a model and a member of the royal family who William would know well.
Hanbury also recently showed up to a royal event without her wedding ring, furthering speculation that there was trouble in her marriage. A clip from a recently released Christmas special has also gone viral. In the clip from "A Berry Royal Christmas," William reaches out to put his arm around Kate's shoulder.
Instead of embracing his act of affection, Kate immediately did a kind of shoulder roll and forced William to withdraw his hand. Of course, it's possible that the gesture meant nothing at all.
Although all of these facts have led to speculation that the two are having trouble in their marriage, royal insiders insist that that couldn't be further from the truth. In fact, in response to the shoulder scandal, the royal family issued a statement suggesting that Middleton is just very against PDA.
"The couple, unlike Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, do make a point to keep the PDA to a minimum in public events because they are the future king and queen," the statement explained.
That explanation makes enough sense, but it hasn't totally quelled the speculation that there was something more to the gesture. After all, if the future king is initiating the PDA, you'd think there'd be some sort of exception.
Whether the couple is really on the rocks or not may only be revealed with time. Given William's mother's marriage to his father ended, though, he should be careful. Even rumors of an affair can have a devastating impact on the entire family.
