Prince William and Prince Harry’s Regrets About Last Phone Call With Princess Diana

In a new HBO documentary, Diana, Our Mother: Her Life and Legacy, Prince William and Prince Harry shared the regrets they felt about he last time they spoke with their mother, Princess Diana.

The documentary is a tender look back at the good at the bad — family photographs she took, the fun times she shared with her children, her divorce, her struggles with the paparazzi, her political legacy — and her last phone call to William and Harry.

William was 15 and Harry was 12 when Diana passed away. It was summer and they were in the Scottish Highland. Diana phoned them from Paris, and both recalled being eager to get off the phone and play. That would be the last time they would speak to her.

Harry said, “I can’t really necessarily remember what I said, but all I do remember is regretting for the rest of my life how short the phone call was. And if I’d known that that was the last time I was going to speak to my mother — the things I would have said to her.”

Though Harry couldn’t recall precisely what Diana had said to him, William did. But he opted to keep that memory to himself. He did say, “I think Harry and I were just in a desperate rush to say goodbye, you know, ‘See you later, and we’re going to go off,’ and if I’d known now, obviously, what was going to happen, I wouldn’t have been so blasé about it and everything else.”

Diana, Our Mother: Her Life and Legacy is available to stream on HBO.
