Prince William Goes Out of His Way to Help Fan Take Selfie — Proving Royal Selfies Are Here to Stay

The Prince of Wales even gave a tip on how to flip to the correct setting

Prince William is a selfie pro.

On Tuesday, the Prince of Wales, 41, had a sweet exchange with 33-year-old Leigh Stinchcombe as he made his way into the Homewards Sheffield Local Coalition meeting. Prince William stepped out in Sheffield for his Homewards initiative, visiting one of the six U.K. cities tapped to explore innovative solutions to homelessness.

As seen in a video shared to X by Richard Palmer of the Daily Express, Prince William and Stinchcombe shook hands, and the fan appeared to ask the royal for a photo.

Prince William gave a nod and held Stinchcombe's water bottle as he got situated, appearing to ask, "Do a selfie?" as the well-wisher grabbed his phone. William put his hands on Stinchcombe’s shoulders and pointed at the phone to suggest he "spin around that one," referring to the iPhone camera mode and smiled for the shot.

"What's your name?" Prince William asked following the photo moment and reached to shake his hand again. "Have a good rest of the day, see you later," the royal added before he walked on.

Elsewhere during the visit, the Prince of Wales was game when someone in a small group similarly asked for a photo during the housing workshop.

"Yeah, of course," the royal replied in a quick clip shared to X by Kate Mansey of The Times, where William smiled in the middle of the casual picture.

While members of the royal family have historically not engaged in photo-taking with the public at events, Prince William and his wife, Kate Middleton, seem to be relaxing the traditional stance and posing for selfies when people ask. The Prince and Princess of Wales set the tone with their first joint appearance of 2023 and took selfies with staff, volunteers and visitors after opening the new Royal Liverpool University Hospital last January.

"They were so welcoming. They were so warm and friendly," ophthalmic imaging technician Amber Otto, who took selfies with both Kate and William, told PEOPLE. "Even when they were being rushed out, they made sure they made time for everybody."

"The Princess asked me what I did," she added. "They were talking to as many people as possible."

According to the royal family's website, "There are no obligatory codes of behavior when greeting members of the royal family." While the page explains how to bow and curtsy, nothing is said about selfies.

While King Charles and Queen Camilla have yet to fully lean into the selfie trend, members of the family including Prince Harry, Meghan Markle, Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie have posed for the pictures at public events.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex smiled for a selfie with fans in the stands during a sitting volleyball match between Ukraine and Nigeria at the Invictus Games in Düsseldorf, Germany in September 2023, while Prince Andrew and Sarah Ferguson’s daughters took a selfie with a well-wisher during a Big Lunch celebration held during the King and Queen’s coronation weekend last May.
