Prince William, Duchess Kate have sweet Easter video call with students amid coronavirus

Prince William and Duchess Kate are lifting spirits amid the coronavirus pandemic with video calls to students.

In a video posted to the Kensington Palace Instagram Wednesday, the British royals are seen speaking to students and staff at the Casterton Primary Academy in Burnley, England, to "thank them for their hard work and dedication - and to wish the children a very Happy Easter."

Typically the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge have in-person public engagements, but due to the pandemic, they're taking things virtual.

In the video, they first chat with two young boys who wore bunny ears in celebration of the upcoming Easter holiday.

"That's a strong look," William said after Kate laughed, "We should've had our bunny ears on."

The students showed them pictures they drew of their mothers, who both work in the healthcare field. "I'm really proud of her," one boy says of his mother who works for the U.K.'s National Health Service.

Kate agreed, "You should be really proud of her. They do an amazing job the NHS workers."

The other boy told them he was "happy" to be in school while his mother has to work.

In a following clip, two girls also decked out in bunny ears showed the royals what crafts they were working on at school. "I've done this," one said, holding up a small bag.

"Wow, that's brilliant," Kate said before William chimed in: "Is that a little handbag?"

"No!" the girl laughed, causing the couple to laugh along. "It's an Easter bag!"

Towards the end of the video, the royals also spoke to the school staff.

"Thank you so much, it's great to meet the kids," Kate said, praising the staff for a job "really well done" in keeping a sense of normalcy and structure for children of key workers.

William added, "We just want to say a huge thank you to you guys and well done in keeping it all going. Please pass on many messages of support for the staff and all the volunteers, they're doing a great job."

The royal family has been personally affected by coronavirus.

In late March, Prince Charles, the heir to the British throne, tested positive for coronavirus. In early April, the 71-year-old announced he was "on the other side" of his diagnosis and feeling better.

Last week Charles was still practicing social distancing but appeared virtually to open a new hospital dedicated to serving coronavirus patients. It was the first time a member of the royal family has virtually opened a building.
