Apple TV+ is reserving a spot on the couch for The Prince of Tides, an adaptation in the very early stages of the Oscar-nominated 1991 film of the same name starring Barbra Streisand and Nick Nolte.

Tate Taylor, director of The Help and Breaking News in Yuba County, is reportedly developing the series for the streamer. Taylor already has a pre-existing relationship with Apple TV+, serving as an executive producer on the upcoming comedy Mrs. American Pie starring Kristen Wiig and Allison Janney.

Based on the 1986 novel by Pat Conroy, The Prince of Tides concerns one Tom Wingo (Nolte), a married teacher and football coach from South Carolina who travels to New York City after his twin sister's latest suicide attempt to help her impossibly chic (also married) psychiatrist Susan Lowenstein (Streisand). Susan soon ends up helping Tom work through his own trauma, they fall in love along the way, and have an affair to remember.

Though Streisand was snubbed for a Best Director nod, The Prince of Tides went on to be nominated for seven Oscars, including Best Picture and Best Actor for Nolte — eventually losing in all categories.

Not much is currently known about the upcoming series as Apple does not comment on developing shows, but Taylor is expected to write and exec produce. Most importantly, does this production have Streisand's blessing — or curse?
