Prince Harry seems to have extra pep in his step lately. Look no further than his recent Miami polo appearance as an example because his post-royal life looks good on him. While his home country will always be the U.K., the Duke of Sussex is letting everyone know that the U.S. is where he is planting his roots with Meghan Markle and their two children, Prince Archie, 4, and Princess Lilibet, 2, — and his official paperwork may just prove a significant moment in the royal family feud may have played a part in this shift.

His official country of residence changed from Britain to the United States in paperwork that was filed with Travalyst, the eco-tourism non-profit group that he works with. This is a major shift from the prior four years when he continued to list the U.K. as his home, per Newsweek. What makes the change so curious is the date that the papers were filed: June 29, 2023, which just happens to be the day that Buckingham Palace revealed that Harry and Meghan were no longer residents of Frogmore Cottage. Even though the eviction notice came in January of that year, just weeks after the release of Prince Harry’s memoir, Spare, it took time for the couple to move their belongings out of the home, which was a gift to them for their wedding from Queen Elizabeth II.

Frogmore Cottage was always a controversial residence for Harry and Meghan because the British tabloids were never happy about the couple trying to make the house a home. After significant renovations at the taxpayers’ expense, the Sussexes made sure to pay back the $3.2 million tab after they gave up their royal duties in January 2020. The reimbursement came shortly after their Netflix production deal was announced, but the couple maintained the residence by paying a monthly lease until King Charles III gave them their eviction notice.

While the details of the Travalyst paperwork were just made public this week, Harry has been hinting that the U.S. has been home for quite some time now. In a February 2024 interview with Good Morning America, Harry gushed about his life in California. “It’s amazing,” he said. “I love every single day.” When asked if he was considering U.S. citizenship, he surprised everyone with his response. “The American citizenship is a thought that has crossed my mind, but certainly is not something that is a high priority for me right now,” he shared with a hint that it’s certainly a possibility at some point in his life. The British tabloids can no longer say that Harry is miserable with his new life because every clue is telling a much different tale.

That doesn’t mean Harry is turning back on his home country, but his new life is much different than the royal role he originally was destined to fulfill. Even with a few missteps along the way as he and Meghan got settled in California, the journey out of the royal family turned out to be the right one for him.
