A Royal Rift

The news that Prince Harry and Prince William are in a feud has been a disappointment to fans of the Royal Family (and to the royals themselves).

The rift seemed to move from gossip to fact during an interview in Harry's documentary, Harry & Meghan: An African Journey where he addressed the fact that he and William had drifted apart.

"Part of this role and part of this job and this family being under the pressure that it’s under… inevitably, you know, stuff happens. But, look, we’re brothers. We’ll always be brothers. We’re certainly on different paths at the moment but I will always be there for him and, as I know, he will always be there for me."

Different Paths

No one knows the major cause in the rift between the Fab Four, but many credit it to the fact that William is being groomed to be king. However, Harry and Meghan are also said to have "ongoing feelings of isolation." A source told People:

"William is the future King. There is going to be some competitiveness between him and Harry. That already puts a rock in the relationship."

Royal historian Robert Lacey explained that "after the death of their mother, Princess Diana, in 1997, the two brothers were thrown together by the tragedy of their childhood. But it’s inevitable, as they grow up and develop different personalities, that synchronicity won’t apply anymore."

Not Spending Christmas Together

While there was a hope that the rift was on the mend, the news that Harry and Meghan would not be attending the royal family Christmas festivities was further cause for concern. Instead, they would be visiting Meghan's mother, Doria Ragland. Buckingham Palace said in a statement:

"The Duke and Duchess of Sussex are looking forward to extended family time towards the end of this month. Having spent the last two Christmases at Sandringham, Their Royal Highnesses will spend the holiday this year, as a new family, with the Duchess’ mother Doria Ragland. This decision is in line with precedent set previously by other members of the Royal Family, and has the support of Her Majesty The Queen"

Can They Work Things Out?

Even though the brothers seem to be at odds, there is still the hope that they can work things out soon. An insider explained:

"Everyone is hoping that they will come back from this break stronger than ever, and maybe with some time out of the spotlight, they can figure out what path to take next. [They are] going to have to try to figure out how to be civil, but they are on different paths now. It’s just the reality of the situation."
