It looks like Prince Harry and Duchess Meghan will miss Trooping the Colour, the annual celebration of the British monarch’s birthday, for the second year in a row.

People reported that the Duke and Duchess of Sussex did not receive an invitation to this year’s festivities, which take place June 15. The couple also did not receive an invitation to last year’s ceremony, the first-ever Trooping the Colour held in honor of King Charles III.

Since stepping back as senior members of the royal family in 2020, Harry and Meghan have sparingly made appearances for official royal events. They last participated in Trooping the Colour in 2022, when they traveled to London to honor Queen Elizabeth II’s Platinum Jubilee. However, the two maintained a low profile during their brief visit, not joining the rest of the family at the parade nor on the traditional Buckingham Palace balcony.

A Buckingham Palace spokesperson explained to Bazaar.com at the time that only senior royals “who are currently undertaking official public duties on behalf of The Queen” would be invited to make public appearances.

Harry and Meghan previously participated in Trooping the Colour in 2018 and 2019. The following 2020 and 2021 ceremonies were significantly downsized due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Ultimately, royal watchers can expect to see limited appearances from the royal family at this year’s Trooping the Colour, especially as two of its most prominent members continue to undergo treatment for their respective cancer diagnoses. While King Charles has returned to public duties since announcing his condition back in February, the attendance of Catherine, Princess of Wales—who revealed her diagnosis in March—is not yet known. Indeed, Kensington Palace recently confirmed that Kate would miss a June 8 rehearsal. Her usual role as the inspecting officer at the traditional Colonel’s Review will instead go to Lieutenant General James Bucknall, KCB, CBE, People reported.
