A Dramatic Exit

In an announcement that shocked the world, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, released a statement announcing that they would be stepping back as "senior" royals and would be splitting their time between England and North America.

"After many months of reflection and internal discussions, we have chosen to make a transition this year in starting to carve out a progressive new role within this institution. We intend to step back as 'senior' members of the Royal Family, and work to become financially independent, while continuing to fully support Her Majesty The Queen. It is with your encouragement, particularly over the last few years, that we feel prepared to make this adjustment."

Their Second Act

While it is at the moment unclear what the Sussexes' new role will look like (this "royal showdown" could affect that), but it's clear that the popular couple is looking to branch off on their own. According to their website:

"The Duke and Duchess of Sussex take great pride in their work and are committed to continuing their charitable endeavours as well as establishing new ones.In addition, they value the ability to earn a professional income, which in the current structure they are prohibited from doing. For this reason they have made the choice to become members of the Royal Family with financial independence."

It isn't clear how long Meghan and Harry have been planning their major move, but you can't really blame them. Meghan has been the target of horrific, racist abuse by the British press, so it makes sense that the couple would want to leave that behind.

Partnering With Disney

One of the major moves that the couple has made is Meghan signing a voiceover deal with Disney. However, this partnership with be done with benefit the preservation organization Elephants Without Borders, not for the financial gain of the Sussexes. Yet.

Karey Burke, the president of ABC Entertainment, hinted during the Television Critics Association press tour that this partnership could be the start of something else for the couple, saying:

"We have an office waiting for them in the animation studios building should they be looking to produce television."

Could the Sussexes be following in the Obamas' footsteps with their Netflix deal?

How Long Has This Deal Been In The Making?

In a newly resurfaced video from The Daily Mail, Prince Harry is observed talking to Disney CEO Bob Iger at the London premiere of The Lion King in 2019, where he makes mention of Meghan's voiceover talents.

Harry can be heard saying "You know she does voiceovers. Did you know that? You seem surprised. She's really interested." Iger seemingly replies "Sure. We'd love to try."

Will Meghan return to acting? Is the relationship between Harry and Prince William damaged beyond repair? The world is truly watching.
