With Prince Harry and Meghan Markle splitting off from the Royal Family and giving up their roles as "senior royals," the drama surrounding the royals is at a recent high. Everyone wants to know the details about this rift, and what drove the couple to leave. According to Harry, they had "no other option" than to leave.
"The decision that I have made for my wife and I to step back is not one I made lightly. It was so many months of talks after so many years of challenges. And I know I haven't always gotten it right, but as far as this goes, there really was no other option.
What I want to make clear is that we're not walking away, and we certainly aren't walking away from you. Our hope was to continue serving the Queen, the Commonwealth, and my military associations, but without public funding. Unfortunately, that wasn't possible."
With all of this drama going on, people are asking the obvious question: Will it ever be covered on Netflix's The Crown?
Harry Is Not A Fan Of 'The Crown'
If Harry has any say in it: absolutely not. Biographer Angela Levin, who interviewed the Duke of Sussex for her book, Harry: Conversations With the Prince, stopped by BBC Breakfast and mentioned that Harry is not a fan.
"Harry, when I went to interview him in the Palace, the first thing he said to me when he shook my hand was, 'Are you watching The Crown?' And I hadn't been at the time, I felt very embarrassed and I got it and he said, 'I'm going to make sure I stop it before they get to me.'"
So yeah, I wouldn't start fancasting Meghan Markle just yet.
Don't Expect To See Harry And Meghan
If The Crown's creator Peter Morgan is to be believed, he never intended to grapple with the modern monarchy on the Netflix show anyway. He told Entertainment Weekly:
"I know how my show is going to end — but that’s long before where we are now. I feel uncomfortable writing about events within a certain time period. I think there’s a certain amount of time within which, if you write about it, what you do instantly becomes journalistic. Because it’s too close to the moment. If you wait a certain amount of time, if you allow fifteen or twenty years, basically a generation, between you and [the events] then you can write about it somewhat freely as drama."
Revisit It In 20 Years
However, he's not ruling out revisiting the story sometime in the more distant future.
"Let’s wait twenty years and see what there is to say about Meghan Markle," he continued. "I don’t know what there is to say about Meghan Markle at the moment. I wouldn’t know and I wouldn’t presume. She’ll only become interesting once we’ve had twenty years to digest who she is and what her impact has been. If I were to write about Meghan Markle I would automatically be writing journalistically. I’ve got nothing to say about Meghan Markle."
