The pair met in 2004 while she was studying to get her economics degree at the University of Cape Town and Harry was spending time in South Africa during his gap year.

Harry was impressed by how Chelsy had no interest in his title or royal connections. “Unlike so many girls I met, she wasn’t visibly fitting herself for a crown the moment she shook my hand. She seemed immune to that common affliction sometimes called throne syndrome,” he wrote in his January 2023 memoir Spare.

“I’d always wanted to know what it might be like to meet a woman and not have her eyes widen at the mention of my title but instead to widen them myself, using my mind, my heart. Harry and Chelsy split in 2010 after she concluded she didn't want to live her life as a royal wife and hated being in the public eye. “I completely understood her desire for freedom. If I had a choice, I wouldn’t want this life either. I would miss her very much, but I understood she put her freedom first,” he wrote in Spare.
