All eyes have been on significant members of the British royal family since King Charles III’s cancer diagnosis. The sovereign’s youngest son, Prince Harry, made a very quick trip to the United Kingdom for a short reunion with his father before returning back to California, and we may now know the reason why. The Duke of Sussex attended a major awards event last night, one that took him from Montecito to Las Vegas.

Prince Harry was on hand to present one of the biggest awards of the night during the 13th Annual NFL Honors. The father of two honored Cameron Heyward from the Pittsburgh Steelers with the Walter Payton Man of the Year Award, which distinguishes players who demonstrate a commitment to serving their community. During Harry’s opening remarks, his cheeky charm and humor came out, making a few jokes here and there about rugby and American football.

Harry’s appearance comes just a few short days after the Duke of Sussex flew to the United Kingdom to be with his father, following his recent health update. The king was initially underwent treatment for an enlarged prostate when the medical team discovered a form of cancer, which has not been publicly disclosed. King Charles reportedly called Harry personally to let him know, and the Duke of Sussex caught a flight from Los Angeles to the U.K.

Although their meeting was short, one royal expert believes their time together could be the catalyst that begins to heal the rift between father and son. “I certainly think we’re seeing a real thawing in the relations between Charles and his son,” royal author Katie Nicholl said. “I know, for Charles, the door has always been left open regardless of some of the things Harry has written… I was told by a source very close to the king that whatever Harry has said or done, he loves his son.”

For the last few years, King Charles III and Prince Harry’s relationship has been strained, to say the least. Hopefully their brief meeting will be enough to start to turn the tide. Until then, it seems Harry will continue to build his life in the states.
