When Prince Harry and Meghan Markle were evicted from Frogmore Cottage by King Charles III in early 2023, many royal fans thought that the Sussexes were unbothered by the real estate move. However, Tom Quinn, author of Scandals of the Royal Palaces: An Intimate Memoir of Royals Behaving Badly, is claiming that Harry’s reaction was much different behind closed doors.

The Windsor residence, which was a wedding gift given to them by Queen Elizabeth II in 2018, was yanked from them after the release of the Duke of Sussex’s memoir, Spare. While the palace never confirmed that this was a consequential move in retaliation for his book, the timing was sure curious. “Harry and Meghan imagined Frogmore would always be there for them even if they came back to the UK for just a few weeks each year and even if they were no longer working royals,” Quinn explained to the Mirror. “That assumption speaks volumes about just how out of touch with each other King Charles and his son had become.”

Quinn described it as a “slap in the face” for Harry who felt like it was “the last straw” in the family feud. “Harry was absolutely furious and in tears about being evicted from Frogmore – he felt his father had no right to do it and that it was purely vindictive,” he added. If the royal expert’s insight is even slightly accurate, it makes total sense as to why Prince Harry noted the change of his country of residence on June 29, 2023, which was the Sussexes’ official move-out date at Frogmore Cottage.

“Harry couldn’t see that choosing to stop being a working royal would inevitably mean being deprived of his royal residence,” Quinn continued. “Harry took it as a cruel rejection – a painful reminder of all that he felt when his father fought with his mother during their long drawn out, painful divorce.” However, the Duke of Sussex had a right to be upset as this was the place he and Meghan first brought home Prince Archie after they had lovingly renovated the home. It’s also understandable to think that the place was going to stay in their possession after reimbursing the taxpayers for the renovations and paying a monthly lease on the property.

Instead, the home has remained vacant for almost a year. Prince Andrew was supposed to move there to downsize his lifestyle since he has no discernible income anymore. Yet he’s refusing to move and is currently staying put at Royal Lodge, much to the chagrin of his older brother. The treatment in the royal family doesn’t always seem fair, and Frogmore Cottage might be a strong example of this selective treatment.
