Crown Prince Frederik and Crown Princess Mary of Denmark are set to take the throne on Jan. 14, but things are reportedly very chilly between the couple ahead of the big day. There have been rumors that Queen Margrethe decided to abdicate the throne in an attempt to save the royal couple’s marriage amid the allegations that Frederik had an affair with socialite Geneveva Casanova.

On Wednesday, Frederik and Mary looked like they would be rather anywhere else but at Christiansborg Palace for a New Year’s reception. They both looked stoic and rather tense as they walked side by side into the hall. (See the photos HERE.) A source told the Danish media outlet, Ekstra Gladet, that “the couple did not look [like] they were enjoying themselves” and that the body language between them reached a “freezing point.” They kept their interactions limited during the engagement and kept a notable distance between them — this was not a warm day between the couple.

Frederik and Mary’s frostiness reportedly stems from paparazzi snapshots taken in October that captured the prince spending time with Casanova — and of course, his wife of almost 20 years was nowhere to be seen. While no one in the Danish royal family has confirmed or denied the news, Princess Mary’s Christmas message on Instagram certainly alluded to troubles in her marriage.

“We need each other if we are to succeed,” she wrote. “And that’s not only true in the working world and for those of us who are working to combat social isolation. This is true for all of us. Humans need humans.” There seems to be a sense of loneliness in her holiday wishes, and it feels like the sadness drips from every word.

Casanova firmly denied the rumored affair to Hola! in early November. “I flatly deny the statements that suggest a romantic relationship between Prince Frederik and me,” she said. “Any statement of this type is not only completely untrue but also distorts the facts in a malicious manner. This is already in the hands of my lawyers, who will take care of the pertinent steps to protect my right to honor, truth, and privacy.”

However, royal expert Phil Dampier believes that the Danish royal family is doing PR damage control by having Queen Margrethe abdicate the throne. “It’s possible that the Queen took this action because she would have been terrified of the marriage breaking up and the royal family losing Mary,” he explained to The Telegraph. “It would have caused major problems. The Queen has always seen Mary as a tremendous asset.” It’s just another royal family soap opera playing out in the press.
