Sophie, the Duchess of Edinburgh and Prince Edward attend an event at the City Chambers in Edinburgh to mark one year since the city's formal response to the invasion of Ukraine on March 10.

Prince Edward and Sophie, the Duchess of Edinburgh have unveiled their holiday wishes.

On Monday, the Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh’s annual Christmas card was revealed by the Daily Mail. While Prince Edward, 59, and Sophie, 58, have yet to officially circulate the festive message through the royal family's social media channels, royals editor Richard Eden said the card featured their joint monogram with a simple message.

“Wishing you a merry Christmas and a happy new year from Edward, Sophie, Louise and James,” Eden reported. The Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh are parents to Lady Louise Windsor, 20, and James, Earl of Wessex, 16, but didn’t include any photos with their kids for the card.

According to the reporter, the main image is a smiling shot of Prince Edward and Sophie taken in Edinburgh, Scotland on March 10, where they met members of the Ukrainian community at Edinburgh's City Chambers to mark one year since the city's formal response to the Russian invasion. The visit coincided with Prince Edward’s birthday, which was especially memorable because Buckingham Palace announced that King Charles conferred the title of Duke of Edinburgh on him. King George VI created the title for Prince Philip when he married the future Queen Elizabeth in 1947, and she was known as the Duchess of Edinburgh until her accession in 1952.

Fast-forward to the present, and the Duchess of Edinburgh title passed to Sophie when Prince Edward received the dukedom. Their son, James, became the Earl of Wessex in the same sweep, taking the title his father received when he got married in 1999. During the couple’s first visit to Edinburgh with their new titles on Prince Edward’s birthday, he called it a "very special and slightly overwhelming day” and sweetly referred to Sophie as "Duchess," prompting laughs from the crowd who came out to see them. A caption on the card shared by the Daily Mail reveals that Prince Edward and Sophie were “listening to the Ukranian choir on the balcony” when the main photo was taken during the March visit.

The holiday card also includes solo shots of Edward and Sophie — each meeting animals!

The couple chose a picture of the Duke of Edinburgh gently petting a Clydesdale horse in Garvagh, Country Londonderry in Northern Ireland in June, positioned beside a shot of Sophie at puppy training for Guide Dogs for the Blind in May. The Duchess of Edinburgh is the patron of the charity, which provides trained canine companions to people living with sight loss, and visited Guide Dogs’ Reading center with her husband as part of The Big Help Out, a national day of volunteering in the U.K. in honor of the coronation of King Charles and Queen Camilla.

Prince Edward and Sophie were front and center for the coronation celebrations, from sitting front row at the Westminster Abbey crowning to appearing on the balcony of Buckingham Palace after the historic service with their children. Both individually and as a couple, the Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh have taken on a heavier royal workload since the change of reign. Last December, King Charles named Prince Edward and Princess Anne as Counsellors of State, giving them the power to royals can carry out constitutional duties on his behalf if he is abroad or unwell.

The BBC reported that British Parliament “fast-tracked" the Counsellors of State Bill through both houses to avoid the potential for "an awkward constitutional problem" involving Prince Andrew and Prince Harry. The Counsellor of State position typically belongs to the sovereign's spouse, followed by the first four people in the line of succession over the age of 21. Currently, those are Queen Camilla, Prince William, Prince Harry, Prince Andrew and Princess Beatrice, Andrew's eldest daughter. Because Harry, 39, and Andrew, 63, are no longer senior working royals, Parliament felt it was best to expand the cohort to include two more people who could be called upon to stand in for Charles.

In August, Prince Edward and Sophie were among the cohort of royals who received new military appointments from King Charles ahead of his first Accession Day. Prince Edward was named Colonel-in-Chief of the Royal Dragoon Guards and Colonel-in-Chief of the Queen’s Royal Hussars, while Sophie became Colonel-in-Chief of the Royal Irish Regiment and Royal Colonel of the Queen’s Own Yeomanry. Her appointment to the Royal Irish Regiment fills a position previously held by Prince Andrew, the BBC reported.

In January 2022, Queen Elizabeth stripped her second son of his military titles and patronages after he was accused of sexual assault in a lawsuit filed by Virginia Roberts Giuffre, an alleged victim of convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. Prince Andrew has denied any wrongdoing and settled with Giuffre out of court in February 2022.

While the Duke of York is no longer a working royal, he continues to attend major royal events like the coronation and might step out for Christmas at Sandringham like last year.
