The HBO comedy “Curb Your Enthusiasm” – the Larry David-starrer that had its debut way back in October of 2000 – will finally sign off after more than 23 years with its 12th season beginning February 4, it was announced on Thursday. And while David’s claim of the show riding off into the sunset has seemingly accompanied the announcement of each new season over the past several years, this time he apparently means it. Or at least, HBO does.

Maybe.

“As ‘Curb’ comes to an end, I will now have the opportunity to finally shed this ‘Larry David’ persona and become the person God intended me to be – the thoughtful, kind, caring, considerate human being I was until I got derailed by portraying this malignant character,” he said in the announcement. “And so ‘Larry David,’ I bid you farewell. Your misanthropy will not be missed. And for those of you who would like to get in touch with me, you can reach me at Doctors Without Borders.”

Following the show’s last season launch, new episodes will debut each Sunday leading up to the series finale on April 7. It will simultaneously be available to stream over Max. The show actually started as a one-hour comedy special in 1999, so it’s really been going for nearly a quarter-century. Reports had surfaced earlier this year that the coming season would be “Curb’s” last, but it drew denials at the time. Turns out that reports of its demise weren’t greatly exaggerated after all.

It’s been noted by each recent HBO executive regime that the decision to continue the show was David’s and David’s alone, much as the timeline for launching each subsequent season has been his. There have been as many as six years between seasons and a total of nine years between Seasons 8 and 10. Word has leaked that the show would indeed be wrapping for good after Season 12 – but again, David has changed his mind before. In fact, he made an episode to conclude the fifth season entitled “The End” that was intended to be the series capper way back in 2005 – 18 years ago.

Casey Bloys, Chairman and CEO, HBO and Max Content, was Thursday in a statement, “It’s hard to say farewell to such a groundbreaking, brilliantly funny and iconic series like ‘Curb Your Enthusiasm,’ which has left its mark across television and the comedy genre. Working alongside Larry David and (executive producer) Jeff Schaffer as well as all of the comedic masterminds that comprise our producers, cast and crew has been a joy I will always treasure.”

“Curb” stars David as an exaggerated (but not too) version of himself in a semi-improvised comedy that offers a tongue-in-cheek depiction of the writer-producer-comedian’s fictionalized life. Besides David, the cast for the forthcoming final campaign will feature Jeff Garlin, Susie Essman, Cheryl Hines, J.B. Smoove, Richard Lewis, Ted Danson, Vince Vaughn and Tracey Ullman.

Over the life of the show, “Curb Your Enthusiasm” has received 51 Emmy nominations and won two: for directing and editing. It also has five Golden Globe nominations and a lone win for Best Comedy/Musical Series in 2003.
