'Pretty in Pink' director on the making of the 1986 teen classic

Howard Deutch made his directorial debut with the Molly Ringwald movie “Pretty in Pink.” The film was written and produced by John Hughes, who’s responsible for teen classics like: “The Breakfast Club,” “Sixteen Candles,” “Weird Science” and many more. Deutch tells Yahoo Entertainment Hughes wanted to build an empire of teen flicks. How did the two of them decide to cast Ringwald? “I felt like it was always written for Molly,” Deutch says. “She was a force, even at 16.” When it came to the popular character Duckie, played by Jon Cryer, Deutch says he and Hughes actually wanted Anthony Michael Hall. “He didn't want to do it,” he says. “John [Hughes] was shocked and hurt because they were so close.” After Hall passed on the role, he reached out to Cryer. “I think he created an amazing character,” he says. Deutch also talks about the film’s lost ending where Duckie, not Blane, ends up with Andie. He says the audience booed when they saw this and he thought, “I can’t believe this is happening.” Hughes rewrote the ending and Deutch had one day to reshoot the prom scene where Blane gets the girl.
