Pretty Little Liars: The Perfectionists reveals what happened to Alison and Emily

Spoiler alert: This post contains plot details from the March 20 series premiere of Pretty Little Liars: The Perfectionists.

When Pretty Little Liars ended its seven-season run in 2017, all the Liars got happy endings. For Alison (Sasha Pieterse), that meant a life with Emily (Shay Mitchell) and their twins. And for Mona (Janel Parrish), that meant a life in France, where she secretly held Mary and Alex Drake (Andrea Parker and Troian Bellisario) captive. So then how did they both end up in Beacon Heights for the Pretty Little Liars spin-off, Pretty Little Liars: The Perfectionists?

That question was quickly answered in the the Perfectionists premiere. As Mona and Alison caught up over pie, we learned that Mona left France after “the reasons I was there escaped me.” In other words, Mary and Alex escaped, so there’s a chance we could see them again at some point in the spin-off. Although they’re probably trying to stay as far away from Mona as possible.

As for Alison, she left Emily behind to move somewhere she doesn’t know a soul, because as she puts it, “Emily loves me. She just can’t get past the past.” When Mona says she thought they were happy, Alison responds, “We are. And then we’re not. It always comes back to trust.”

So for now, Alison’s focus is on leaving behind the mean girl she was in high school and helping the kids at BHU. It’s unclear exactly what that means for the couple, but considering Emily is not with her, it’s a safe bet we won’t see her for a while (if at all).

Pretty Little Liars: The Perfectionists airs Wednesdays at 8 p.m. ET on Freeform.
