Presidential Candidates Weigh In on Brussels Attacks

Tragedy struck in Brussels, Belgium, Tuesday morning when two bombs were set off in an airport and a metro station. Stateside, several of the candidates in the upcoming United States presidential election weighed in on the catastrophe. One of the more outspoken individuals was Donald Trump. “Frankly, the waterboarding, if it was up to me, and if we changed the laws or have the laws, waterboarding would be fine,” Trump said to Today’s Matt Lauer and Savannah Guthrie, “because we work within laws. They don’t work within laws. They have no laws.”

Hillary Clinton, the Democratic frontrunner, also spoke with Today about what needs to be done to mitigate the risk of terrorism. “We’ve got to tighten our security. I’ve talked about a visa system and our passenger record system,” explained Clinton. “When I was secretary of state, we often had some difficulties with our European friends because they were reluctant to impose the kind of strict standards we were looking for.” And while Clinton didn’t agree with the concept of torture, she did express the need to explore every channel necessary. “We do have to give law enforcement and intelligence professionals all the tools they need to do the job to keep America safe,” she said. “And they don’t need to resort to torture, but they are going to need more help.”

Republican candidate Ted Cruz made several appearances on Fox News as well as posting on his Facebook page. “If I am president, we will defeat radical Islamic terrorism,” Cruz said to Fox News. “We need a president who unleashes the full force and fury on ISIS and utterly destroys them — that’s the only way to keep us safe.”
