Andrew Yang, the entrepreneur and Democratic presidential candidate, gave a shout-out early Sunday to new “Saturday Night Live” cast member Bowen Yang for his impression of the candidate during the season opener.
“Haha great to see @bowenyang as me on @nbcsnl!” Yang tweeted. He later followed that with another tweet offering advice to the long-running comedy show: “Tip to the @nbcsnl writers – you should work on some new lines for @bowenyang because I’ll be here all through 2020.”
Bowen, who also played North Korean dictator Kim Jong-Un during the show’s cold open opposite Alec Baldwin’s Donald Trump, appeared as Andrew Yang in a sketch featuring other Democratic candidates in a CNN town hall to discuss the prospect of Trump’s impeachment.
“If you think my candidacy is going well, I’m literally giving free money to people and I’m still in sixth place,” Yang’s Yang quips.
Also in the sketch, the show’s other newbie — Chloe Fineman — astral-projected herself into the town hall as Marianne Williamson. “Here’s how I will impeach Donald Trump: I will trap his soul inside this crystal,” Fineman’s Williamson said. “So, this election, vote for magic. Good morning!”
The sketch also featured Chris Rudd as Cory Booker, Kate McKinnon as Elizabeth Warren, Alex Moffat as Beto O’Rourke, Colin Jost as Pete Buttigieg and a slew of guest appearances: host Woody Harrelson as Joe Biden, Larry David as Bernie Sanders and Maya Rudolph as Kamala Harris.
Sen. Kamala Harris also made note of Rudolph’s impression of her on the show, and the send-up of one of her most quoted lines from a candidate debate this summer. “That girl being played by @MayaRudolph on @nbcsnl? That girl was me,” she tweeted.
