President Joe Biden has garnered backlash after presenting LL Cool J with the Phoenix Award at the Congressional Black Caucus in Washington D.C. on Saturday (Sept. 23). The POTUS botched the veteran rapper’s name and even referred to the emcee as “boy” during his speech.

LL, along with MC Lyte, were recipients of the prestigious award for their musical contributions.

“Two of the great artists of our time representing the groundbreaking legacy of hip hop in America, LL Jay Cool J, uhhh … ” said Biden as the audience began to laugh. “By the way, that boy’s got— that man’s got biceps bigger than my thighs,” he added.

As some saw nothing wrong with the 80-year-old‘s mistake, others called out his use of the term when referring to Black men by White men. The “Luv U Better” rhymer did not respond to the incident.

Biden used the term “boy” earlier this year when he spoke of Maryland’s first Black governor, Wes Moore.

“You got a hell of a new governor in Wes Moore, I tell ya,” said Biden to the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers in February. “He’s the real deal, and the boy looked like he could still play. He’s got some guns on him.”

Democratic NJ Senator Cory Booker spoke on Biden’s use of “boy” in 2019.

“We make mistakes. We sometimes tread upon issues that maybe we aren’t knowledgeable of,” Booker said. “I don’t think the vice president should need this lesson, but this was a time for him to be healing and to be helpful – especially the time that he is looking to bring this party together and lead us in what is the most important election of our lifetime.”

“You don’t joke about calling black men ‘boys,’” he added.

Since Saturday, social media has had much critique about Biden’s remarks on LL Cool J.
