Prep Wrestling: Victor Valley continues dominance at the DSL Finals

The Victor Valley wrestling team celebrated another dominant showing at the Desert Sky League Finals as 11 boys wrestlers won titles in their weight classes Saturday afternoon.

Michael Rodriquez, Isaac Tellez, Tayari Tye, Aaron Ramirez, Avian Singh and David Camacho each won by pinfall in their championship matches for the Jackrabbits.

It’s the second straight year that 11 boys from Victor Valley have won league titles.

Avian Singh moved up a weight class from last season and captured the 145-pound title by pinning Adelanto’s Brandon Allen in 42 seconds. Singh began the day by pinning Barstow’s Trinidad Romero in 39 seconds to reach the title match.

Singh was named the lower-weight MVP after spending just a minute and 22 seconds on the mat.

Earning the upper-weight MVP award was Barstow’s Diego Garcia, who also captured a league title at last year’s finals. Garcia had a bye in the first round and then pinned Victor Valley’s Steve Chavez at 1:22 for the 195-pound crown.

Garcia was the only member of the Aztecs to capture a league title.

In girls action, Victor Valley had three girls win a league title. Two of those were earned on the mat, while Vianny Chavez went unopposed in the 131-pound division.

At 101 pounds, Leilahni Hart pinned Excelsior’s Kendra Gurerro for the title, and Roxanne Hurtado pinned Excelsior’s Alycia Reyes in 20 seconds for the 111-pound crown.

Hurtado was named the lower-weight MVP.

Excelsior, formerly of the Cross Valley League, saw two girls capture league titles Jerzi Tully (121) and Iztel Padilla (126).

Granite Hills’ Chloe Navarrete earned the upper-weight MVP honor after pinning Victor Valley’s Natalie Gonzales in 39 seconds in the 170-pound division.

All top-three placers advance to the CIF-Southern Section individuals tournament next month.
