Dr. Amanda Hess is a pretty typical ob-gyn in her hometown of Frankfort, Tenn. Yet one thing was indeed helping her stand out in recent months: the fact that she was pregnant. And when it came time to give birth to her own baby, Hess still needed to put in a little bit of doctor duty.

While Hess was in the hospital preparing to give birth, she became aware that another patient, Leah Halliday Johnson, was fully dilated and ready to go. Halliday’s doctor on duty was still on the way to the hospital, so Dr. Hess decided she would pitch in, even though she was in nothing but a hospital gown herself.

As Hess told WKYT News, “I just put on another gown to cover up my backside and put on some boots over my shoes, to keep from getting any fluid and all that stuff on me, and went down to her room.”

Turns out Hess recognized Johnson from doing her rounds a few days before. The patient was noticeably relieved to see the doctor and get her birthing process underway.

When explaining what was going through her head at the time of her selfless gesture, Hess simply stated, “You know, I love doing what I do. I love taking care of mothers and babies, and a lot of doctors are always thinking of their patients even when they’re a patient themselves.”

As for Dr. Hess, she gave birth to her healthy daughter, Ellen Joyce, shortly thereafter.
