‘Preacher’ Recap: Custer Makes Quincannon a Believer

On Preacher, Jesse Custer attempted to convince Odin Quincannon — the big man in town who turned his back on God — to lead the people by example and attend church service again. But when the preacher failed, he reverted to the good old-fashioned fear of God. Custer began asking Quincannon what he thought would happen to him in the afterlife.

Custer probed Quincannon with fearful questions like, “What if there is punishment?” and “What if there is fire?” But Quincannon wasn’t buying the religious hype and replied, “What if there is ice?” “What if there are monsters?”

Finally Custer came right out and asked the rebellious Quincannon, “Aren’t you afraid?” to which Quincannon boldly replied, “No; sounds like you are, preacher.” This infuriated Custer, but he kept his cool and calmly bargained with the sinner. He offered Quincannon his father’s piece of land if Quincannon would attend church on Sunday and still leave as a nonbeliever. And shockingly, it worked.

Preacher airs Sundays at 9 p.m. on AMC.
