Government and transport figures were warning the British public there was no need to panic buy after France banned UK freight amid the emergence of a new strain of COVID-19. However, retailers said there would be shortages if disruption continued.
Long lines were reported from the early morning at some supermarkets on December 21.
David Elward, who recorded the footage at the Marks and Spencer food hall in the Fforestfach suburb of Swansea, in Wales, said he waited for 70 minutes. He wondered if the crowd was down to “the usual pre-Christmas rush or people stockpiling?”
He also posted footage of a woman serenading those waiting with a song. Credit: David Elward via Storyful
