In the distance, the sweet sound of a ringing bell is echoing because it's almost time for Recess again. A group of independent filmmakers have come together to bring the 3rd Street Elementary school gang to life in a short film, thirteen years after the Disney show originally went off the air. Based off the characters created by Paul Germain & Joe Ansolabehere, the recreation isn't sanctioned by Disney, but if all goes according to plan, the film will be available to watch online for free.
The project is the manifestation of Jerome Yoo and Kent Donguines, whose 11-page script will see TJ, Spinelli, Mikey, and the crew navigating the complexities of high school. The production team, based out of Vancouver, are working on the film on a voluntary basis and are simply doing the project to bring the beloved animated series to life in live action form. An act of humanitarian work if there ever were one. As of now, the project is collecting donations on IndieGoGo and is listed as in post-production.
The film has landed a few faces you might have seen before as well. Benjamin Wadsworth of Deadly Class is set in the role of TJ alongside with Riverdale's Emilija Baranac, who is stepping in as one of The Ashleys. While the behind-the-scenes crew has had some film festival success in the past, they make it clear on the IndieGoGo page that this Recess project isn't for monetary gain—just the desperate Millennial desire to see if precious Mikey is still wearing his heart on his sleeve. Keep an eye out for the movie to go online in August and in the meantime, stay the hell away from Finster.
