Power and Music: Game Changers from UMG’s Lucian Grainge to Mogul Emilio Estefan Talk Influence, Beyoncé & Jay Z (Video)

Some of the most influential people in the music industry were front and center at the Clive Davis and Recording Academy’s gala party. We spoke to them and asked what it takes to be on top, just like Beyoncé and Jay-Z who this year are No. 1 on Billboard’s Power 100 list.

Universal Music Group Chairman/CEO Lucian Grainge (No. 2 on the Power 100 list), musician/producer Emilio Estefan and journalist Gail King, among others, spoke to Billboard about what it takes to make it big.

“Keep going,” Grainge said. “Focus … the real power is the power of the idea in the song.”

For Grammy-winning Estefan, who has been nominated more than 40 times, “power is about making a better world, making things good for other people and helping other people,” said the mogul who early in his life performed in restaurants for tips.
 
Beyoncé and Jay Z influence has inspired many by the way they’ve changed the game, King said.

“They’re definitely the most powerful and influential couple when it comes to music,” says King, a longtime journalist. “The two of them together are magic, and it’s just nice to see. They’re married, they’ve had a baby, they both have super duper tours. They’re both great people. I’m thinking it’s working.”
 
Others who attended the party included Juicy J, David Foster, Neil Sedaka and pre-telecast Grammy host Cyndi Lauper, who added that it’s important for those to make it count once they make it big.
 
“I always felt that if you’re gonna climb to the top of the heap you better have something good to say that helps humanity,” Lauper said.
