Posthumous Grammy Winners Through the Years

David Bowie passed away last year, but he still received four Grammy nominations for his final album, Blackstar — which was released just two days before his death. If he wins an award this time around, he won’t be the first performer to win a posthumous Grammy.

Legendary singer Ray Charles holds the record for most awards won by the dearly departed. Ray died in 2004, but he won five Grammys in 2005 for his album Genius Loves Company.

Comedians George Carlin and Joan Rivers each won an award the year after they died. Carlin won his fifth and final award for Best Comedy Album, and Rivers won for Best Spoken Word Album.

And Amy Winehouse won six Grammys in her brief career — the last one coming just months after she died. So even in death David Bowie will still have a presence at the Grammys — and he has a shot to win an award.
