Post Malone appeared on The Howard Stern Show on Tuesday, and while he was there, he delivered a stirring acoustic rendition of Alice in Chains’ signature hit, “Them Bones.” Listen to an upload of the cover below.
Introducing it by saying “Hey, Howard, hopefully I don’t fuck these lyrics up,” Post began his take on the song, playing guitarist Jerry Cantrell’s signature chromatic riff on a beefy acoustic guitar, paired with layers of vocal harmonies. Building tension through the opening verse, the arrangement blossomed on the first chorus when the drum line dropped and Post belted the iconic “Ah’s” originally delivered by Alice’s Layne Staley.
By the end of the song, Post was able to build enough energy with his gravelly croon that it’s easy to forget that you’re listening to an acoustic version of the grunge anthem. He finished it off with a final a cappella “Ah,” and then remarked to Stern: “Fucked it up there, didn’t I?” Listen to the performance below.
Elsewhere in the interview with Stern, Post discussed his face tattoos, losing weight thanks to hot sauce, why he referenced Bon Scott in “rockstar,” and more. This is the first time, Post has covered a classic rock song on The Howard Stern Show. Back in 2022, he turned in a rendition of Pearl Jam’s “Better Man.”
Post dropped his latest studio album, Austin, this past July, and wrapped his 2023 tour the following month. Since then, he’s purchased a $2 million Magic: The Gathering card, performed for NPR with his first Tiny Desk concert, and signed on for the 2024 iteration of Stagecoach, where he’ll perform a special set of country covers (grab your tickets here).
