Post apocalyptic 'King Lear' staged at California Lutheran University

California Lutheran University closes out its 26th season of the Kingsmen Shakespeare Festival with its post-apocalyptic take on "King Lear."

The outdoor performances at the Thousand Oaks campus run Fridays to Sundays through Aug. 6. The play is set "in the near future in an abandoned shopping mall after an apocalyptic event."

Michael J. Arndt, festival co-founder and "King Lear" artistic director, said in a news release the play's relevance comes with the popularity of shows like HBO's "Succession," which bears strong resemblance to Lear, and his interest shows such as AMC's "Walking Dead."

"We don’t have zombies, but it is that fear of the outside, the unknown,” he said.

Gates open for picnics at 5:30 p.m. and shows start at 8 p.m. Tickets are first come, first served.

Admission is $25 for adults; $20 for seniors 62 and older and active military, $15 for students 18 and older with ID and free for children. Lawn boxes, which accommodate four to six people, are $100 to $120.

Tickets are available for purchase online with $3 fees. For more information and tickets, visit kingsmenshakespeare.org or call 805-493-3452.
