Porsche’s Newest Technology Literally Composes Music While You Drive
Does everyone remember Baby Driver? I don’t think there’s ever been a movie that’s collectively made the country want to jump in their cars, turn up the music and drive around aimlessly. But what most people (or at least I) quickly realized is that, despite living through the heyday of automotive audio, we can never, ever sync up our driving tunes as well as Ansel Elgort. Or can we?
After two years of development, Porsche has announced a new adaptive sound experience called “Soundtrack My Life.” The feature would allow drivers to select “a basic musical mood,” then when they begin driving, the software would compose music in real time from pre-recorded tracks and sounds based “on the acceleration, speed and centrifugal forces in the car.” In essence, how you drive would determine what you hear, like Hans Zimmer is composing for your own personal car chase (or simply your daily commute).
“This new technology isn’t about playing personalised playlists or simply adjusting the tempo and pitch of existing music to match the car’s speed,” says Norman Friedenberger of Porsche Digital who is leading the project. “It’s about creating an individual sound experience from a construction kit with a variety of sounds and musical structures during a drive. This is created by the driver and their journey in real time. This will then sound different for everyone – as unique as the journey itself.”
While it’s not available in Porsche cars just yet, a press release noted that it is in a prototype stage as a smartphone app. The German automaker is reportedly still deciding whether it should live in that form only or be integrated into the vehicles themselves, but others on the Porsche team have us optimistic we’ll eventually be living out our Baby Driver dreams.
“We are now in the process of testing this physically in the vehicle and creating an overall experience,” said Dr. Rolf Zöller, managing director of Porsche Digital, in a promotional video posted by Carscoops.
