PopWatch Planner: Oscars and Downton Abbey
Could there be something happening next Sunday that we’re excited about? Hmm… Hmm… maybe something we’ve had two covers of, have seen all the movies for, and have debated and debated for months now? Yes, of course the Oscars are next weekend, but first up is this week’s exciting season finale of Downton Abbey, followed by the narrowed-down field on American Idol, Dark Skies opening in theaters, and more. Have a great week!
SUNDAY
Downton Abbey, 9 p.m., PBS
Let’s hope you haven’t had this finale spoiled yet (if you haven’t, we’d avoid Googling!). Grab those Kleenexes and the ones you love most — this one is a punch to the gut.
MONDAY
The Bachelor, 8 p.m., ABC
Tierra is gone! But does that mean the show isn’t going to be as interesting? Well, considering that it’s hometown dates time and that in the promos Desiree’s brother seems like he is about to hit Sean, we don’t have anything to worry about.
TUESDAY
Smash, 10 p.m., NBC
Smash has always been oozing with potential and each week a number delivers just enough to keep viewers hanging on. Maybe this week’s is “Home” from The Wiz. Also, Jeremy Jordan’s cheekbones.
WEDNESDAY
American Idol, 8 p.m., Fox
Ten semifinalists enter, five survive. Nicki and Mariah continue to entertain. Plus, how are you going to understand the hilarious recaps if you don’t watch the show?
THURSDAY
The Vampire Diaries, 8 p.m., The CW
Last week’s killer ending left us all wondering what’s next. Is our favorite white tank top wearing brother really gone? If the trailer for next week is any indication we can expect a lot of denial and tears in this week’s episode.
FRIDAY
Dark Skies opens in theaters
Keri Russell can be seen on the small screen (The Americans) and big screen this week. The movie might not be Oscar worthy, but it’s got enough of the paint-by-number thrills (distressed animals, a character unable to control his/her body, mysterious marks on children, someone staring-off, mouth agape, with a vacant look in their eyes) to get the adrenaline going.
SATURDAY
Independent Spirit Awards, 10p.m., IFC
Missing Andy Samberg on SNL? Well, he’s hosting this year’s Indie Spirit Awards. If the Oscars are just too mainstream or you just want to see Moonrise Kingdom get some recognition, this show is your best bet.
SUNDAY
The Oscars, 8:30 p.m., ABC
It’s. the. Oscars. Watch. And come back to EW.com to discuss!
