Popular chicken restaurant set to open second Tallahassee location

With Tallahassee residents gobbling down the first Slim Chickens offerings, the owners are building on its success by opening its second restaurant this week.

Angelo Crowell, a former NFL player and growing restaurant entrepreneur with his wife, Kim, are opening the second Slim Chickens restaurant in Tallahassee at 2329 Apalachee Parkway at 10:30 a.m. Monday, Aug. 14.

The college sweethearts are thrilled to follow up on the success of their first Slim Chickens location on North Monroe Street that opened Jan. 9.

Slims serves hand-breaded buttermilk marinated chicken tenders, chicken sandwiches, chicken and waffles, wings, milkshakes and more. Restaurant hours are 10 a.m.-midnight Monday-Saturday and 10:30 a.m.-10 p.m. Sunday.

First opening: Former NFL player and Tallahassee lawyer opening chicken restaurant with 'southern hospitality'

Angelo and Kim, who is from Tallahassee and is a Maclay graduate, met when they were both attending the University of Virginia. Angelo went on to play in the NFL with the Buffalo Bills and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, while Kim practiced law.

The couple always had a vision of being in business together, so when Angelo retired from the NFL in 2009, they combined their skills and started Kalo Companies in Tallahassee. Together, they’ve grown from one Jersey Mike’s restaurant on Tennessee Street to more than 50 locations in just a few short years. Kalo employs over 700 people and operates restaurants throughout Florida, Georgia and Alabama.

Now, the two are gearing up to expand Slim Chickens in the same way by bringing homegrown, southern hospitality to the community where they planted their roots. The new Slim Chickens restaurant expects to create 75 new jobs in the community.
