Popular burger chain is headed for East Nine Mile Road

The former Wendy’s at 450 E. Nine Mile Road will serve juicy burgers, fries and ice cream treats once again, as a new Five Guys is planned to take its place, according to Angela McArthur of Stirling Properties who confirmed the new tenant to the News Journal.

McArthur said that Five Guys Burgers & Fries has signed a lease and is planning to open sometime between January and March of 2024 if all goes according to plan.

They will be restoring the former Wendy’s building that sits roughly two miles from University Town Center, not tearing it down and starting from scratch.

McArthur said architects are currently designing their conversion plans to submit to local officials for review.

The new building is being modeled after a modernized Five Guys built in Fairhope, Alabama, which includes a pick-up window, according to McArthur.

Customers will be able to order their meal from the Five Guys app during their drive to the store, then conveniently pop by the pick-up window to retrieve it.

Five Guys employees can geographically track how far the customer is away from the restaurant and prepare the meal when the customer is close enough. That way, the fries are always hot when you arrive, she said.

The traditional menu spans a variety of burgers, hot dogs, sandwiches, fries, drinks and shakes. But you can dress up your burger with unlimited toppings at no charge to assemble your perfect combination, including grilled mushrooms, green peppers, A1 Steak Sauce and an original mayonnaise recipe. With 15 toppings to choose from, that leaves over 250,000 different burger options to sample.

The burger patty can stand alone in flavor though, as it is formed with fresh ground beef without a freezer in sight, according to the Five Guys website. All burgers are prepared by hand daily.

The restaurant chain has also gained a cult-following for the extra scoop of fries they place in the bag for the ride home.

The milkshake format follows suit on customization. They begin with the base of a handspun vanilla milkshake, then incorporate as many free mix-ins as the customer would like, including decadent flavors like Double Stuf Oreo cookies and Reese’s Cups, and lighter fruit flavors such as strawberry and banana.

The Five Guys restaurant group originated in Arlington, Virginia, in 1986 and has since grown to host locations all over the world. It is not done with Pensacola yet though — as McArthur said the company is still looking for more Pensacola locations.
