Summer movie season is upon us, which means a whole bunch of new trailers are here too. There’s a wide range of films on the horizon, from Yorgos Lanthimos’ new feature Poor Things, the Rachel Sennott and Ayo Ebediri-starring comedy Bottoms, and Exped4able, which is simply a fun way to spell Expendables 4.
On the TV side, Ahsoka and The Summer I Turned Pretty debuted new teasers, while we got our best look yet at the second season of The Afterparty. Check out the rest of the trailers here.

Poor Things

If you didn’t pick it up from the teaser, the new trailer for Yorgos Lanthimos’ Poor Things makes one thing clear: Bella (Emma Stone) is weird. She’s a weirdo. She doesn’t fit in. But she is “progressing at an accelerated pace,” according to her creator-father Dr. Godwin Baxter (Willem Dafoe), and getting more human-like all the time. Stone’s comedic abilities are certainly coming in handy to portray Bella’s stunted physicality and her childlike hunger for all the world has to offer—offset by a stellar cast that includes Dafoe, Mark Ruffalo, Ramy Youssef, and Jerrod Carmichael. EXPEND4BLES

The Expendables 4 trailer is kind of a few trailers in one. There’s the Mr. And Mrs. Smith bit between Jason Statham and Megan Fox (like, this part even gets different subtitles!). Then Sylvester Stallone shows up, and it becomes an Expendables trailer, complete with the old guard and a terrorist nuclear missile plot that could cause World War III. Then there seems to be a spin-off brewing with Fox and the rest of the “new blood,” (by the way: totally different subtitle font) which includes Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson, Tony Jaa, Jacob Scipio, and Levy Tran. The Afterparty season 2

After the party is the afterparty, and after that is the second season of The Afterparty. The trailer for Apple TV+’s murder mystery comedy (premiering July 12) sees Detective Danner (Tiffany Haddish) and Aniq (Sam Richardson) find themselves in a familiar spot: that is, the scene of a crime. This season’s murder victim is a groom played by Zach Woods, and everyone at the wedding (an expectedly star-studded cast that includes Elizabeth Perkins, Paul Walter Hauser, Poppy Liu, Anna Konkle, Jack Whitehall, Vivian Wu, John Cho and Ken Jeong) is a suspect. Danner, Aniq, and Zoë (Zoë Chao) will have to hear the story of each of the attendees to get to the bottom of this latest whodunnit. [Mary Kate Carr]
King On Screen

Even if you haven’t read a Stephen King book, you’ve probably seen a Stephen King movie—at least, that’s the theory presented in King On Screen, a new documentary that delves into the many, many adaptations of the prolific author’s work. Since Brian de Palma’s Carrie in 1976, there have been more than 80 film and television adaptations of King’s novels, each bringing a different flavor horror or drama to the screen. The doc features a number of directors and collaborators from these adaptations, including Frank Darabont, Mick Garris, Mike Flanagan, Tom Holland, Vincenzo Natali, Greg Nicotero, Mark L. Lester, Dee Wallace, Tim Curry, and James Caan. King On Screen premieres in theaters August 11. [Mary Kate Carr]
Special Ops: Lioness season 1

Taylor Sheridan’s reign at Paramount+ gets all the more star-studded with Special Ops: Lioness, premiering on the streamer July 23. In the first 30 seconds of the series’ new trailer, we get glimpses of Morgan Freeman, Nicole Kidman, and Zoë Saldaña. Joe (Saldaña) is part of the CIA’s Lioness Program, which apparently identifies the “wives and daughters” of “high-value targets” in order to get close enough to assassinate terrorists. But new recruit Cruz (Laysla De Oliveira) seems like she might have trouble with her mission, putting the entire operation (run by Kidman and Michael Kelly) at risk. [Mary Kate Carr]
The Witcher season 3

Time to say goodbye to Henry Cavill on The Witcher. The third season marks the actor’s final outing as Geralt, and if you’ve enjoyed him swinging his sword around, this trailer is for you. Also, if you ship him with Yennefer (Anya Chalotra) this trailer is also for you. And if you like funny little quips from Jasiker (Joey Batey), well, stay tuned, because this trailer is indeed for you as well. One might think the show was going out on a high note, except that the show will continue on with Liam Hemsworth in the starring role. For now, you can enjoy the show in its original incarnation as it premieres in two separate drops, with Volume 1 on June 29 and Volume 2 on July 27. [Mary Kate Carr]

Rachel Sennott and Emma Seligman have teamed up again (this time as co-writers as well as actor and director) for a new film about “ugly, untalented gays.” Sennott and The Bear breakout Ayo Edebiri star as two enterprising queer students with a foolproof plan to make out with cheerleaders: start a fight club! In a heightened, campy high school environment, the besties recruit a teacher (the hilarious Marshawn Lynch) and some fellow female students to learn how to defend themselves—a necessary step when the popular and “psychotic” football players are picking on the weak. Also starring Havana Rose Liu, Nicholas Galitzine, Miles Fowler, and Kaia Gerber, Bottoms premieres in select theaters August 25 and additional cities September 1. [Mary Kate Carr]
My Adventures With Superman season 1

James Gunn may still be searching for his Superman, but Adult Swim already has one. Adventures With Superman, premiering July 6, is a new animated series starring Jack Quaid as the Man of Steel. This version of Clark Kent is still figuring things out, from how to be a proper superhero to interning at the Daily Planet. Of course, that means a lot of dodging Lois’ (Alice Lee) dogged reporting and Jimmy’s (Ishmel Sahid) Superman conspiracy theories. Playing the sincere, OG comic book hero is a big shift for Quaid from his cynical super-hater on The Boys, but this trailer proves he’s the right guy for the job. [Mary Kate Carr]
The Outlaws

Netflix’s latest entry into the Meet The Parents subgenre differentiates itself from the streamer’s last, You People, by swapping the comedy of cultural differences with guns. In a way, Netflix is covering its bases to keep up with such zeitgeist-grabbing comedies as Ghosted and Shotgun Wedding—and, yes, all three movies named came out within the last six months. The Out-Laws sees a soft bank manager (played by Adam Devine) squaring off with his future in-laws (played by Pierce Brosnan and Ellen Barkin), who happen to be bank robbers. To prove that he belongs in the family, Devine agrees to help his outlaw (get it?) future family members take down a big score. Toss in a remix of a song from the 70s and a meta-joke about James Bond and bake for 120 minutes. The Out-Laws streams on July 7. [Matt Schimkowitz]
Bird Box Barcelona

Back from its semester abroad, Netflix is finally putting the blindfold back on. Finally following up on its hit Sandra Bullock vehicle, Bird Box Barcelona is responding to audience demand for more entertainment reminiscent of the pandemic. As the title indicates, the sequel is more of an adjacent continuation, moving the action to Barcelona and seeing how the visual virus spread across Europe. Barcelona boasts more floating objects and cooler eyewear, but no Bullock, which is bullocks. Bird Box Barcelona streams July 14. [Matt Schimkowitz]

From The Prince of Darkness to The Prince of Darkness, Nicolas Cage is trying out all of our favorite demonic entities this year, injecting them with his special blend of psychotic breakdown and cocaine-infused mayhem. Cage plays the Devil in a Collateral-esque carjack movie in which he tries to claim Joel Kinnamen’s soul on the day of his son’s birth. Bad timing if there ever was one. Still, it looks like, as always, Cage is putting every ounce of himself into the picture, and his sweaty, wide-eyed, goated visage is, once again, the main attraction. More than two years after Adult Swim and then-HBO Max announced that long-running fan-favorite comedy series The Venture Bros. would be getting a movie, the trailer for that film is finally here, complete with the longest and weirdest title in this entire list. From the trailer, it’s clear that Radiant Is The Blood Of The Baboon Heart will pick up right where the show’s seventh season ended, with Hank Venture on the run from his family, and a whole lot of focus on the various inter-organizational conflicts that constantly break out between the show’s various coteries of weirdos. (Meanwhile, here’s a tidbit for the real nerds: The accompanying press release for the trailer notes that Jane Lynch will appear in this as Bobbi St. Simone, who was revealed in the show’s final episode, back in 2018, to be Hank and Dean’s mom. “I’m back,” the demon Crowley (David Tennant) announces to his friend—wink, wink—Aziraphale (Michael Sheen) as the trailer for Good Omens season two begins. And with that, after four years, Prime Video’s sci-fi series returns. This time, Neil Gaiman’s British show doesn’t have its source material (Gaiman and Terry Pratchett’s novel of the same name), so who knows what unearthly adventures Crowley and Aziraphale will get up to. The trailer suggests Jon Hamm’s Archangel Gabriel will be heavily involved in stopping another Armageddon-like event. Season two drops all six episodes on July 28. [Saloni Gajjar]

Stop me if you’ve heard this before: Batman, Superman, and Wonder Woman walk into a bar… to save the world. That’s kind of the plot for Justice League: Warworld, DC Universe’s upcoming animated movie. Jensen Ackles, Darren Criss, and Stana Katic voice the superheroes who come together from different universes on Warworld in an attempt to free the planet of Warworld. The Summer I Turned Pretty, a.k.a. the YA show dedicated to serving Taylor Swift’s fanbase, returns for a second season on July 14. Created by Jenny Han and based on her book trilogy, the sweet teen drama follows Belly (Lola Tung) juggling her feelings for her two childhood friends, Jeremiah (Gavin Casalengo) and Conrad (Chris Briney). Now, the teaser for the upcoming episodes doesn’t reveal much, but rest assured that Belly will continue to be a messy teen—as is her right. [Saloni Gajjar]

Ouija boards, who? A24’s latest horror film is bringing us a freaky new way to get possessed. Directed by Danny and Michael Philippou, the Australian horror film Talk To Me follows a group of friends who discover an embalmed hand of a Satanist and use it to conjure spirits. Their fun party game goes wrong when they unleash supernatural forces into their world. While the film has already been making waves after its world premiere at Sundance this year, A24 is finally releasing it in theaters on July 28. [Saloni Gajjar]
Star Wars: Ahsoka teaser

At long last, Disney+ has announced that Ahsoka will release on August 23. After Andor set a high benchmark for the franchise, the latest Star Wars show focuses on Rosario Dawson’s Ahsoka in the character’s first live-action solo project. Set after the fall of the Empire, she’ll investigate emerging threats to the galaxy. Ahsoka will tie into storylines from Star Wars: Rebels, bringing in Natasha Liu Bordizzo’s Sabine Wren and Mary Elizabeth Winstead’s Hera Syndulla. Directed by Stephen Kijack, Rock Hudson: All That Heaven Allowed is an intimate portrait of Rock Hudson, an icon of Hollywood’s Golden Age in the ‘60s and ‘70s. The documentary explores his life and career, and how the studios presented him as an embodiment of heterosexuality. However, behind closed doors, he lived a double life as he hid his identity as a gay man. His eventual death from AIDS in 1985 shocked the nation but stirred a shift in how the public perceived the disease. After premiering at the Tribeca Film Festival, the doc will air on HBO on June 28.
