‘Poor Things,’ ‘Barbie,’ and ‘Saltburn’ Win at the 2024 Costume Designer Guild Awards

Hosted by Wendi McLendon-Covey, the 26th Costume Designers Guild Awards took place February 21 at NeueHouse, celebrating excellence in film, television, short form costume design, and costume illustration.

Oscar frontrunners “Poor Things” and “Barbie” both took home top awards (for Excellence in Period Film and Excellence in Sci-Fi/Fantasy, respectively), which leaves the Best Costume Design Oscar race still neck-and-neck between the two. “Saltburn,” which did not receive an Oscar nomination, was awarded Excellence in Contemporary Film. Elsewhere, Netflix’s limited series “Beef” continues its long triumphant march, picking up the CDGA for Excellence in Contemporary Television almost a year after it premiered.

Honorees during the evening included 2024 Oscar nominees Annette Bening and Billie Eilish, as well as Francine Jamison-Tanchuck. The gala was sponsored by premier sponsor Western Costume Company and supporting sponsor Westfield Century City.

An Oscar nominee for “Nyad,” Bening received the Spotlight Award honoring an actor whose talent and career personify an enduring commitment to excellence, including a special awareness of the role and importance of costume design. The costume designer for “Nyad,” Kelli Jones, and legendary costume designer Albert Wolsky (“All That Jazz” and “Bugsy”) accepted the award for her.

The Career Achievement Award went to Jamison-Tanchuck, whose credits include both the original “The Color Purple” and its 2023 musical reimagining. Oscar-nominated “The Color Purple” star Danielle Brooks presented Jamison-Tanchuck with the award.

Billie Eilish received the Vanguard Spotlight Award, which celebrates a trailblazer who ignites the imaginations of cognoscenti and audiences alike. According to the CDGA, “this accolade is a tribute to a performing artist who sets new standards in their sphere, not only for their outstanding achievements but also for their courage as a visionary that serves as an inspiration to us all.” Shirley Kurata, the designer for Eilish’s “What Was I Made For” music video, presented her with the award.

The CDG includes more than 1,200 costume designers, assistant costume designers, and illustrators working in motion pictures, television, commercials, music videos, and new media programs throughout the world. Below are the winners as voted on by the Guild’s membership:
